Why doesn't my engine take the recommended amount of oil?

I have a 96 civic. D17y7 engine, no vtec. When I put oil up to 2nd dot (Full) it runs terribly. It blows an unbelievable amount of smoke and fills the entire street and it pops and bogs down while driving. But when I put oil up to about first dot, it runs perfectly fine.

I changed the oil and put it about halfway between the 1st and 2nd dot. It ran totally fine for a day. Then suddenly today while I was driving, I almost redlined (About 6,000 rpms) which I did yesterday too. But today it started blowing tons of smoke again, even when i barely tapped the gas. so i took some oil out, to where it's barely registering on the stick, and it started running fine.

Can anyone help?? I know my car and engine pretty well, but with this one, I'm stumped. Thank you!

The symptoms you describe do sound like too much oil.

Wonder if someone has put the wrong dipstick in the engine? One from a different model, that's too short.

Next time you do a change, check how much it should take to fill the engine, and carefully measure that much in. Then check the dipstick again, and make a new F mark where the correct level actually is.
