In the US, it is the legal graduate (doctoral) degree required to practice law in almost all states. It's what you get when you graduate law school.

The specialty degree, obtained by a few attorneys after law school (after their JD), is called an LL.M. or Master of Laws.

it is a Juris Doctor degree or JD, which translates into Doctor of Law. It is the basic law degree required by most jurisidictions in order to qualify for taking the bar exam.

Source(s) : I got my JD in 1993 and passed the bar that year too.

A JD is a PROFESSINAL DREGREE in Law, similair to an LLB which is an academibc deree. Just like an MD, a JD is Professional, not academic. It is not a graduate degree and is a requirement to apply for admission to the bar.
