I deliberately excluded brands which a parent company simply purchased, such as Volkswagen which owns Bentley, Porsche, Lamborghini, Bugatti and many others, or BMW who own Rolls Royce, Fiat with brands like Alfa Romeo and Lancia and so on.

Toyota wanted a luxury brand. Kind of hard to do that when your cars are known as economic cars. It’s all about brand image.
