How can I improve my wireless internet signal/connection?
My wireless connection cuts out every so often and when it is connected, it runs slowly.
I m using a Netgear N-300 USB Wireless Adapter.
It got pretty good reviews, so I don t think it s the adapter that is causing the bad reception.
My router is downstairs, directly beneath the room that the adapter is in. So it s literally "right above" the router, just separated by a floor.
Is there anything I can do to improve my wireless signal? Unfortunately I cannot move either my adapter or my router. They both have to stay where they are.

Do you have an Android phone? If so, download and install Wifi Analyzer by Kevin Yuan. (Apple doesn't allow this type of program on its iDevices.) What you are trying to find is what the signal strength is of your router and what channel are you transmitting on. Most likely you have neighbors who are stomping all over your signal. This app will tell you what channel you should be on. If you don't have an Android phone or don't know someone who does, log into your router through your browser and look at the wireless settings. Common default channels are 1, 6, and 11. Change it to one of these first to see if it helps. If those three don't help, try 3, 4, 8, or 9. You'll be doing this in the blind, though, without the Android app.
Another thought is your antenna orientation. Routers are very directional. If your router is from the cable company, then it doesn't have external antennas. If you have it standing up, then the signal is good for the floor it's on, but not the floor above and below. If you lay it down, then the strongest signal will be the floor above and below it, but not so much for the floor it is on.
If you have a router with two antennas, then have one vertical and the other horizontal for the best coverage.
