It depends on the school. A economics degree from Yale, Duke, or the University of Chicago will be sufficient to get a financial analyst position out of college. But an economics degree from Saginaw Valley State University, Southern New Hampshire University, or the University of Phoenix will not be sufficient.

The best thing you can do is look at the job placement statistics of the school you're considering. If you're considering a school without a finance degree for undergrads, ask the career services office for job placement statistics for econ and business administration majors, and compare those placement rates to other schools with finance majors. If a school doesn't have job placement statistics that they can share, it means their placement rates are embarrassingly bad and you should not matriculate there unless you're desperate.
