How do you train your dog? Which type are you?
Are you one of those that uses the Dominance, or Alpha Role training/educating methods, that believes you need to show your dog you are the alpha of the pack? Or are you one of those that uses only positive reinforcement, believing there is no such thing as dominance or alpha role and maintain a friendly relationship without any punishing?
Which type are you?

We show our dogs we are the alpha because we are the ones who feed them, so they better obey if they want to get fed.
Our latest dog is a dominant dog, so sometimes I have had to stare him in the eyes and tell him to Knock. It. Off. But he's much sweeter since he went through adolescence.

I train my dog using positive reinforcement and clicker training. However, I also believe in Dominance / Alpha role training methods. I never punish my dog though as a true leader / alpha is known to lead and lead reasonably, not punish for no reasons. All professional trainers know that. I also do tend to talk to my dog a lot too. I strongly believe in the connection that I have with my dog and the fact that it strengthens the more I talk, and communicate with my dog. But, for Alpha reasons, I don't let my dog sleep on my bed... I let it sit on the couch but not a lot, I do walk through doors first, and make her sit before she gets her food / play. So basically, my method is a mix of both and so far it has worked great for my dog. However, my dog is a Purebred Border Collie which do pick up things VERY fast, so you might have to treat your pet differently. Anyway, whatever way you train / treat your dog, I'm sure you'll do fine. :)

Punishing does not train a dog, it makes it scared and introverted, dogs need an alpha figure in their pack, it's up to the owner to have that role or the dog will be out of control, I use treats and lots of loving reinforcement when training my dogs

Every human in our house is a leader of the pack. Humans come first. That being said I give treats for good work and the only punishment I dish out is a poke in the shoulder or bottom when needed.
I have 2 Alaskan Malamutes, one is 2 and weighs 141 pounds and the other is his little sister, 8 months and 100 pounds. They are loved and spoiled. Spoiled as in well cared for and treats and rawhide abound. If they do their jobs they can have the world. They don't, no treats or bones and they know it.
I think I am a combination of both.

I use positive reinforcement training for my dog.
However it is important to keep in mind that positive reinforcement does not work on all dogs and some dogs take better to different training methods.

Positive reinforcement and clicker training is the way to go. There is no reason to use aversive methods of 'training' when you can teach with +R and clicker training.

I have no clue. I have had many dogs, and each were different. I'm just me. None of my dogs were show dogs, but they were mostly nice dogs.
