How do you know when you've become fluent in a foreign language?
How do you know when you've become fluent in a foreign language? I'd really like to know... I don't know if I'm fluent or not in French...
xD I suppose I can cuss people out in French... but I don't think that's quite the answer I'm looking for ;)
I've ish-dreamt in French before... It kinda had both French and English.... And my college French teacher speaks it at a decent speed, and much better than my high school teacher, anyways... But I've never really been able to practice listening to French people before, so I don't know how fast I can understand... I can definitely read it though.
Well, I can translate anything (je peux traduire n'importe quoi), and I can at least understand all of the abbreviations I've come across...
I haven't started speaking French to my mother yet, lol, although sometimes I want to!
It's just.. the whole fluency thing, it's one of my life goals. So like, if I'm fluent... that means I've fulfilled one of my goals in life... I don't know, I'm 18, the idea that I could have already fulfilled one of my life's goals is.. huge....

When you dream in it.
When it's so subconscious that you wake up from a deep sleep speaking it.
When you can keep up with the fastest speakers of it, both listening to a lecture, and speaking in a full-speed conversation.
No. cussing isn't the key.

Dreaming in a foreign language is certainly a very clear indication that you're fluent. With me, I realized I was fluent in English when, talking to my mother, who did not know a word of it, I noticed she couldn't understand what I was saying and we had been talking for about fifteen minutes. Thinking back, I could not tell when I had switched from Portuguese to English.

when somebody asks you to translate a phrase and you can say it just like that...
it dosent have to do with the accent though....
cause well.. i have an english accent when i speak french
and a french accent when i speak english....
but i think the biggest thing is when you abbreviate...
ex: mais c'est quoi?
mais s'quoi?

When you can say it easily and without any hesitation. Like talking to a native speaker and understanding exactly what they're saying and being able to speak it right back

You're fluent when, like me years ago, you love and win and then lose without speaking English.
