Without a will how can a bank say we owe money?

My dad past away a couple years ago without a will and he owed money on his house to a bank. The bank is trying to get me and my brothers to pay $191,905 on it even though we signed no papers claiming the house and their was no will leaving us the house.

We did not live in the house at any time, he lived in it with his wife who has no connection with me and my brothers.

How is it legal and possible that me and my brothers have to pay for something that has no connection to us?

This sounds awfully fishy. In the US, assuming your live in the US, the laws state that a family member cannot be help responsible for the debts of their deceased family. However the bank probably rightfully owns the house, so none of you will be able to take possession of it. Talk to an attorney to ensure this is resolved.

Tell the bank to contact the widow, then, if there are assets you might conceivably claim, hie to an estate atty for advice on how to press your suit. If there was no will, deceased's assets will be reviewed and distributed according to the rules of an estate administration act. Worth pursuing if he left anything but debts. If not, not.
