Walden: Economy Henry Thoreau quote help?

What does the quote "A stereotyped but unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games and amusements of mankind" mean?

What are some of the games and amusements that Thoreau would probably disapprove of?

Also, according to Thoreau, how large is a house is big enough to live in?

Thoreau thought that there was as much despair in human games as in human lives. He would certainly find little self-achievement in the crowds at professional football games!

A box, six by three feet, is a sufficient house:

"I used to see a large box by the railroad, six feet long by three wide, in which the laborers locked up their tools at night; and it suggested to me that every man who was hard pushed might

get such a one for a dollar, and, having bored a few auger holes in it, to admit the air at least, get into it when it rained and at night, and hook down the lid, and so have freedom in his love, and in his soul be free."
