Is there a non-lethal defense against snakes?

A friend of mine has gotten me into hiking/fishing/etc (you know, the outdoors stuff). I am looking for some kind of defense against snakes. I would prefer non-lethal, as we will be in the woods with young teenagers and around other families as well. I know a .22 pistol with snake shot would work, but are there other options? Pepper sprays, perhaps?

Any help would be great!

All you have to do is take me along. The snakes would be too preoccupied to bite you because they will be enthralled with my perfect body. Or, you can use bear spray and make the bears run away while trampling on the snakes.

Way to may questions asked, second to many variables to list. Anybody and everybody is capable of inflicting bodily harm even to fatality, there is no special training needed, it is called the "Fight or flight" syndrome. If you feel there should be a moral solution to this issues by just training certain individuals it would still be the wrong path. Because everybody's mind, values, morals can change given the right circumstances in there life, again "Fight or flight". The only way to control this is to just eliminate all martial arts training period, but regardless since to earliest time man has always found ways to inflict pain, suffering and oppression. But this is why martial arts was invented, just one big circle feeding off each other. That is why it's call Martial arts it is a form of expression, they could be mad, humble, passive all depending on the circumstances the person feels the need to handle the situation anyway possible so not to get hurt, return to there family and stay alive.

    1) watch where you put your hands and feet.

    2) If you see a snake, give it time to leave.

    3) If the snake does not leave for some reason, use a long stick to start it in the right direction.

The best defense is to walk away & leave them alone. No snake is ever going to chase you, no matter how many times you hear people claim that a snake chased them.

Did you know that 80% of people are bitten by snakes when they try to kill or handle them?

Snakes don't attack people and always attempt to get away from them. If they don't try to escape they will freeze in hopes that you won't see them. If you see a snake, harmless or venomous, it's best just to avoid it and leave it where it is. Snakes deserve to live in the wild and are very important to ecosystems. Killing any animal that doesn't attack you is pointless. Snakes never attack people unless threatened. Wear boots in case you step on them but that's all you have to worry about. Venomous snakes really are not the threat people think they are.

Just watch where you step and carry a pistol with shot. The bad part about snakes is by the time you see it if it's poisonous it will all ready have bitten you. Also carry a walking stick so you can smack it.

in case you didnt know, all reptiles have a protective lense-like structure over there eyes because they never blink.... there for pepper spray would probably just piss it off.... i recommend wearing high boots and carrying a gun. not just for snakes but in case you run across a bear or mountain lion or any other potentially dangerous animals.

Pepper spray would MAKE it bite you.

    Just stick with the .22
