Why does a photon of light move?

Why doesn't it just sit in one place?

    A photon is a perturbation of the electromagnetic field that propagates in it. It has energy (hv) in wave packets that propagates with velocity c in that electromagnetic field.

    Imagine the electromagnetic field as a "sea", and the photon has the "waves" that propagate. When one electron breaks or when he jump from one level of energy to a lower level of energy of an atom, this means that the electromagnetic field is perturbated, and this perturbation (photon) propagates in all directions of the electromagnetic field.

    In the process of the formation of the perturbation, the law of momentum conservation means that this perturbation must move like a wave in the sea.

    Never thought about that before. Maybe it is like asking why does time keep move forward. Maybe it is just the Universal Laws that God created to be so.

    I think the Large Hadron Collider was to answer that question if it could prove the Higgs Field until it broke down.

    The Higgs Field prevents things that have mass to slow down while photons with hardly any detectable mass is not affected by the Field so go through at the speed of light and particles of mass cannot go the speed of light which is fortunate for us.

    The speed of light is an interesting speed limit in that particles with mass cannot reach it, and it is the only speed that massless particles can move.

    A photon is a massless particle. As a result, it can only move at the speed of light.

    Alt: particle wave duality - a stream of photons can be treated as an electromagnetic wave. It falls out of Maxwell's equations that the wave must move at the local speed of light. By virtue of the nature of electromagnetic wave propagation, just as the wave cannot stop and sit in one place, so the stream of photons (and hence each individual photon) cannot stop and sit in one place.

    Because of the conservation of momentum.

    The direction of the energy must be conserved, so must the velocity, that is why it moves.
