I have a dwarf hamster (Not sure what kind) who's fur is changing color. Is this normal?

When we first got her, her fur was all grey. Now she's getting white stripes and isn't even 6 months old. At least we haven't had her for 6 months. She still eats regularly and runs on her wheel regularly. I get her out to play with her as often as I can which isn't as often as I used to with my new job, but I do try. My children cannot hold her alone and she doesn't like my husband. I thought maybe she needed a bigger cage? Could this cause her stress and make her fur change colors? Also sometimes it seems like she's more active during the day than at night. And I'm up a lot at night, so I'd know. Could this cause her fur problem? She has no other symptoms and I can't afford a trip to the vet for a hamster.

You have nothing to worry about. Hamsters hair tends to change colors throughout its life. There are also some hamsters who's coat changes color with the season, and also age does sometimes play a role in it. If you have a Winter White, as another poster mentioned, it is very common to see their fur changing. Wild Winter Whites (from Siberia) will change their fur from a grayish color in the summer to bright white in the winter to help them hide from predators. I would only take her to the vet if you notice the fur falling out, or notice any rashes, etc. Otherwise, don't worry at all. Good luck!

Winter White hamsters change colour, hence they name. However, it's supposed to be in winter, but the length of day light hours affect it so it depends I guess.

As long as she's still eating and drinking I wouldn't worry about it.

If you're questioning whether she needs a larger cage, perhaps she does. The minimum size is 18" x 12".

Dwarfs tend to be up for short periods during the day and night, however, they're more active at dawn.

You may have a Winter White (I think is what they called, may have another name).....I have seen them at petsmart and stuff. They are gray dwaef hamsters but their fur turns white for part of the year (I thought usually around winter, obviously) but maybe you shoul read online about them and see if the pictures look like yours

Good Luck, I really think you have one of those, I dont think she's sick.
