Why not wear a helmet?
I totally understand the idea of an adult's not wanting to be forced to wear a helmet when riding, and I oppose such mandatory helmet laws.
However, I always wear a helmet when I ride. I'd like to know
1) the reasons why those who don't wear helmets all the time, don't wear helmets.
2) Also, do you wear a helmet sometimes? If so, when, and why?
3) Lastly, would you wear a helmet if it were lighter, quieter, allowed better visibility, or had less wind resistance? (Or something else -- what?)
Thanks.

6 réponsesCyclingil y a 1 décennieRoad Attack or Road Pilot 2?
Observe the bike in my avatar. It's time for tires. I don't do a lot of canyon racing any more. I'm a former racer, and I appreciate that my street bike of today is way better than my race bike of the 60s and 70s, so I'm happy with the performance. I don't like square-section tires, though, particularly after just a few miles and after I've paid nearly $400 a pair.
So, what do you think, and why? It would be really good if you'd actually ridden on the tires in question. Please tell me your bike, your experience on those tires, your style of riding, and your advice.
Thanks.
3 réponsesMotorcyclesil y a 1 décennieBridget Regan (The Seeker) or Jordana Brewster (Chuck)?
I can't decide which of these beauties is the most-gorgeous new star on television.
"Smile" goes to Jordana (but it's close)
"Voice" to Bridget
Face? Body? Either one is heaven.
Your thoughts, please...
2 réponsesCelebritiesil y a 1 décennieWhat is the "minus" in a ".jpg-" filename?
How do I open a file with a .jpg- (JPG minus) file extension? I have Photoshop CS2 and Quart xPress 7.31, but neither one seems to know what this is. I'd like to modify the file (it's part of my website, that I own but another guy built, and I don't know if he'll tell me), and the first thing I ran up against is this strange file type.
PS. I know what a .jpg is, and I can open one of those, easily enough. It's the "minus" thing that makes no sense...
3 réponsesProgramming & Designil y a 1 décennieHow gross is it? (women only answer, please)
How gross is an old (like near-60) guy to a late twenties/thirties lady?
Great shape (I'm not fat; can do my age in pushups), full head of (grey) hair, all my own teeth, I smell good, all that -- just in general?
I don't have anyone in mind, and since my last major gf has now turned 30, I wonder how unusual this whole thing is.
6 réponsesSingles & Datingil y a 1 décennieWhat smart phone can do this?
I don't particularly like my TREO 755p, and although I have been a Sprint PCS customer since 1999, I'm willing to change, if the right phone is offered. I just don't know what to get, or if it's available.
I need:
Reliable phone service. (Sprint is good.)
Loud ring, earpiece, headset. (I'm hard of hearing. TREO is very quiet--no good.)
Long battery life. (TREO much better than Q that I had before, but I still use the extended battery and carry 3 spares.)
Quick and reliable email reception. (TREO is glacial, locks up just about daily.)
Bluetooth. (TREO has it.)
Built-in GPS and street navigation. (TREO needs an additional GPS unit. That is no good.)
What I'd like: file-storage and editing capability. (Though TREO has an SD card, it's not easy to get stuff on and off of it.)
USB connect to remote hard drive.
I guess I want tablet PC capability in PDA size, with built-in telephone.
What I don't need: camera, tunes, movies, TV, small size, cool looks, gadgets, add-on coverage plans.
3 réponsesCell Phones & Plansil y a 1 décennieDream: Mouse in my pocket?
I had the strangest dream last night, unlike any dream I remember ever having.
In the dream, I was watching TV on the living room couch, and a mouse crawled up and "adopted" me. A few minutes later, he (she? I don't know) crawled into the right pocket (I am right-handed,FWIW) of my hoodie and nestled there a few minutes. Then he crawled out. I felt there was something still in my pocket, so I turned the pocket inside out, and two sets of leg bones, with the feet still attached, fell out.
I looked at the mouse, who was crawling away on the floor, not bleeding, but clearly without rear legs. Other than that, he appeared and acted normal. The feet, by the way, were roughly twice as big as they should have been, though the legs were normal-sized.
I'm creeping myself out, thinking about this. Any ideas?
6 réponsesDream Interpretationil y a 1 décennieWhy do women of all ages...?
seem more interested in being asked out, in being contacted in personals sites, than in actually meeting someone?
I've noticed that women often list "minimum height 5'10", for example, and they're 5'2". What advantage is there in coming up to some guy's belly button, when you could look him in the eyes?
Is it that they think men lie on their profiles? (I don't)
Is it that they set these criteria thinking that they are such hot stuff? (Hi. I make $10,000, but I want a man to make $75,000 or more.)
Oh, and they want a man who makes a lot of money, but who can spend all his time with them. Wha?
Anyway, I've tried all kinds of dating sites and met a few women (many of whom, by the way, also lie: for instance, "average" means "fat;" "curvy" means "fat." Even "athletic" might mean "I was a cheerleader back in the Jurassic period, but now I'm fat."
Where is a regular, normal woman who doesn't smoke, isn't married, and isn't fat? Is that too much to ask? Send your site. I'm 56.
2 réponsesSingles & Datingil y a 1 décennieWhere is non-ethanol gasoline available near Chicago?
Do you know of anywhere that they sell non-gasohol gasoline near Chicago? I hear that even the Stabil-ized stuff does not winter very well.
Please -- answer only if you know. Your opinion (a opposed to a fact) only screws up this forum. I'm not asking for an opinion! Thanks.
2 réponsesOther - Cars & Transportationil y a 1 décennieWhat is "happy?"?
Is there anyone out there who honestly isn't "depressed?"
If it's you, what is it that keeps you going? I know I've got to keep breathing, but I just don't feel like it most of the time.
Please don't tell me to "get help." You go ahead and do it: just tell me what's better about the state of life than not-life. Yes, I've felt euphoria when I helped someone else and they reacted positively, or when I thought I was going to die but didn't; but that's not happiness, and it doesn't last -- and I don't have the energy to keep doing ever-more-dangerous things. The high isn't that great, you know.
Please don't go Baker-acting me; this is not new, and I'm no danger to anyone; it's just been the way I've felt since I started thinking about what life is good for -- decades.
...and if God wants me to be happy, He could make me that way, so don't give me that line.
Yes, I do have feelings. I feel sad when I see others in pain, but I don't feel sad for me -- it's just empty.

6 réponsesPhilosophyil y a 1 décennieWhy do YOU allow?
Does anyone realize how much permanent damage is being done to the Constitution, in exchange for the perception of some ethereal "safety?"
Politics, in other words, is usurping our rights. Of course, that's why the Constitution was written the way it was: the writers understood tyranny. Of course, that's why our rulers ignore it.
What I don't know is: why do we tolerate that? Stupid, lazy, ignorant, selfish, scared, powerless? You choose.
If this isn't you, tell me what you've actually done. (Remember, lynchings are illegal!)
6 réponsesOther - Politics & Governmentil y a 1 décennieCongressional malfeasance?
If a lawyer signed a contract on behalf of his client, and hadn't read that contract, wouldn't that lawyer be disbarred?
Even if that lawyer had "his staff" read the contract (but the lawyer signed it), wouldn't the lawyer still be on the hook, ethically and possibly criminally?
How, then, can Congress vote for bills that bind us by law, when they haven't read the bills?
Any lawyers out there want to try a class action? Any federal prosecutors want to do their jobs?
What would you propose, to urge our rulers to follow ANY rules?

1 réponseLaw & Ethicsil y a 1 décennieCutting down a Yoshimura muffler?
I have an RF900R Suzuki, and the Yoshi can is badly dented near the back end. I figure I could drill out the rivets, cut off the last 6" or so off the can and baffle, and re-attach the end plate.
Anybody try this on a sport bike? If so (and only if you have actual knowledge -- no guesses from squids, OK?), did it become obnoxiously loud? Were there other problems (with performance)? I'm not worried about mounting.
Lastly, is there a shorter 3-hole muffler that would work (in case I screw it all up)? URL, if you have it. Thanks.
3 réponsesMotorcyclesil y a 1 décennieWhat's Best Way to Sell a Nice House in Florida?
I have a great "normal" home (as opposed to a "trophy" or "starter" house) in Florida, and I'm trying to sell it myself. I have it on craigslist (Orlando area) and kernestates.com, but I understand a private seller can put a house on mls also.
Forbes says the nearby town is #4 to move TO, unlike most of Florida, so it should go, as it's priced below Zillow (which has it listed with fewer baths and bedrooms).
Any advice you have to get more inquiries, or how to get it listed in mls (or other -- ideas?), would be great. I'll go with a realtor as a last resort, but I'd like to try on my own, first.
6 réponsesRenting & Real Estateil y a 1 décennieWhy do my toes clench up?
For no particular reason, and without anything that I know of changing in my diet, exercise, etc., I've had my toes just clench up, really tightly, several times in the past two weeks. It's usually when I'm just standing for a few minutes (I'm a part-time teacher), and they feel like they're about to tie themselves up in knots, or possibly to cross over each other. I try to stretch them or at least hold them in position, because I really feel they'll snap into some kind of ball. It's painful, but mostly it's scary, because I don't know why.
When they're not cramping, there is no pain, and no limit to motion.
Nothing different in diet, daily patterns, shoes, exercise. I'm 56, not heavy (5'8, 150 lbs), never had any kind of problem, operation, or spent a night in a hospital.
I don't have health insurance, so please don't say, "Get it checked out!" If I don't know what to check, I can't check it out. Random tests cost thousands and act mostly as the hospital's revenue and insurance.
5 réponsesOther - General Health Careil y a 1 décennieAnybody notice how relieved Fox News was when Romney's votes finally topped Ron Paul's?
The Fox crew couldn't stand it that Ron Paul pulled to an early lead in the "voting" after the "debate." They kept denigrating him, and kept extending the voting until finally Romney passed for top spot. But they aren't addressing the fact that Paul is second, far ahead of Giuliani...
Of course, if this poll had been taken by some other (unnamed) network, how likely would it have been that the results would even have gotten reported as-received?
Does anyone detect media bias?
12 réponsesPoliticsil y a 1 décennieHow much do you pay monthly for your cell service?
I don't care what your plan's advertised cost is -- I really want to know how much it costs YOU. (A $29.95 plan, plus all the extra minutes you use, plus taxes, plus 411 calls, all that -- this might easily average $60/month.) I'm looking for real-world, not advertising, in other words.
If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to know know the service provider and phone you use, too; and what did you find out about your plan or phone that you do / do not like?
I'm looking at Sprint Q and T-mobile Dash, as I have a need for lots of memory for my phone book, and I like to be able to fetch emails on the road. A wireless headset and ActiveSync, plus a car charger would also be nice. With rollover minutes, I'd need only 300 a month; without, I could easily go past 1200, and I understand some plans have free incoming minutes -- that would help a LOT.
One more question: do I need phone advice, or a therapist? Thanks!
