why do government agencies usually REQUIRE you to fax them something, but do not allow email??

they say it is insecure. right.

are you telling me that phone lines cannot get tapped???

email is faster, higher quality, instantaneous, and you don't have to wait in line if somebody else is sending an email. where is the down side?

Mise à jour:

plus, fax machines are only one per office (typically), so EVERYBODY shares a single fax number. that doesn't sound as secure to me.

and somebody could just walk right up and grab your fax and walk away with it, and you'd never know...

Mise à jour 2:

plus, upkeep on a fax machine is expensive. having to replace it when it breaks.

email is free, and you don't even need to print it if you don't need to, so you don't waste paper...

Mise à jour 3:

@Mr. Woods:

1. i do my taxes over the internet, why not my email?

2. UPS stores and Kinkos DO have to maintain their fax machines! and US Gov does NOT use them. also, you have to PAY to use their fax. email is FREE!

3. it is physically impossible to use a PRINTER to SCAN anything! you use a SCANNER or COPIER to scan things. then you can quickly email them.

Mise à jour 4:

4.do you know how much fax paper is? and a fax machine costs almost as much as a all-in-one copier!

the government does not share your email address with 3rd parties or spammers or "trolls". and you can change your email address WAAAAY easier than you can change your fax number...

also, a separate fax number costs money, where email is free.

your honor, i rest my case.

Several things may come into play.

    1. That is the old way and they are slow to change.

    2. You do not need to maintain a fax machine with UPS stores and Kinkos locations.

    3. There are sites where you can scan (using cheap printers) and fax online. I do this often.

    4. If trolls get the fax number they really can at most run you out of fax paper. Giving an email out can cause real problems with the system as spammers get the email address. I doubt there are many fax trolls in the modern times.
