Google informs me that they will not "support" Chrome on my computer because it is Windows Vista. What am I supposed to do, throw it away?

I like my computer, and cannot afford another one. Yet, it cannot be changed to Windows 10 or Windows 7 without a lot of money, right? Can you help me out on what to do other then using Firefox like I do now?

Chrome may still continue to work, but as time goes on, computers running the old Chrome version will be more and more vulnerable and out-of-date when used to go online. The notice that you've received means that Chrome will not receive any more fixes or updates.

I should also point out the Microsoft's support for Vista will end in April 2017 so upgrading your OS is an option you really should consider. You can get Windows 7 for around $50 and then download the free Windows 10 upgrade if you're so inclined. Windows 10 is going for around $100 right now.
