How to teach my pitbull to swim/not be scared of the water?

So I adopted my baby last August when he was between the ages of two and three. His previous owner died in a car accident :(

I live in florida so of course, I spend quite of bit of time near the water. Whenever my friends and I take our dogs to the beach, he freaks out. He'll run to the water and then run back on shore and bark and whine. Or he'll just whine. Especially if my lil bro of I go in the water

I bought him a life jacket and don't have access to a pool.

So I took him to an inlet where the water was super shallow and he would walk through it. And after about an hour had him swimming a little towards me although after a few seconds he would go back to where he could stand. I was glad we made progress. However I went there the next day and someone called the cops so I can't go there to swim. Apparently dogs are only allowed in the park area, not the water. (They disregard that rule all the time, its just cause he's a pit)

So idk what to do. I can't even get him to ride on my back at the beach. I know he may never be a strong swimmer. Most pits aren't but i'd like for him to get over the fear.

Do you have a friend that would allow you to use his/her pool to give your dog swimming lessons? Sounds like you were on the right track as well as training and working with him goes. You need to continue. Be careful of the gators, snakes etc. in the freshwater outlets. I think a pool might be your best option. I saw a really neat homemade pool someone made for their dog using PVC pipe and some kind of liner. I think it may have been on YouTube as best I can remember. You might could rig something up yourself or buy a small, metal above ground pool just for him. If all else fails, wait til end of summer when they go on sale and get one for next year. Good luck!

I have a dog for two years now and at first she was scared to go in but she went in on her own so you should wait but when dogs have fears usually what people suggest is make them face that fear so put your dog in the water and let her know you are there for her also try to get a kiddie pool to take steps for her to face the fear
