I think this person meant the program called inner city games that picked up kids on a bus and took them places to play a different sport each week.........

This isn't a scientific study, of course, but the journalist Pete Hamill (in his memoir of growing up in Brooklyn) attributes this to, among other things, the rise of television. Before TV, according to him, kids would be hanging around outside more, and would just naturally organize games of stickball or whatever. With TV in the house, kids would spend more time inside, and there wasn't that "critical mass" of kids just hanging around, so no more stickball.

Ipods and Xboxes and all those hand held toys that keep kids indoors.
