3 pure compounds are formed when 1.00-gsamples of element X combine with, respectively, 0.472 g, 0.105g , and 1.259g of element Z.?

The first compound has the formula X2Z3.Find the empirical formula of the second compound.

Find the empirical formula of the third compound.

Divide the weight of Z in the 2nd compound by the weight of Z in the 1st compound

    0.105 g/ 0.472 g = 0.222

This means that there is 0.222 as much of Z in the second compound as there is in the first.

    Thus, X2Z3(0.222) = X2Z0.666

    Divide the 2 and 0.666 by 0.666 which given = X3Z

Weight of Z in third compound divided by weight of Z in the first compound:

    1.259 g/ 0.472 g = 2.667

Thus: X2Z3(2.667) gives X2Z8 and to obtain the empirical formula

    Divide X2Z8 by 2 which given XZ4.
