Belgium seems to always be the last place people go..why go to brussels when there is Paris,Rome and wherever.?

A Swede I knew had a perfect definition for Belgium "it's a place you have to drive through to get to where you really want to go". Cruel, but for many Europeans, true.

Things to see in Belgium:

1. the Word War I battlefields and cemeteries - very moving - especially if you visit the grave of a relative. The museum in Ypres explains very well.

2. Battlefield Waterloo, where Napoleon was defeated

3. Bruges - the most beautiful and perfectly preserved medieval city in Europe

4. Stunning Crusader castle at Bouillon

5. The Bierodrome in Brussels (if it is still there) is bar with over 400 different beers

6. "La Morte Subite" is a bar in Brussels exactly like it was in World War I. Very atmospheric.

Brussels is a gem. It wasn't destroyed in WWII, so the architecture is fascinating. Do a canal tour. And make sure you get some french fries, seriously. They serve them with mayonnaise, but it isn't like our may. Try it.

and don't forget to go to Louvain, there are several impressive medieval monuments still present, but also a fair number of buildings that look very old, but are from after WWI. The Germans burnt the city down in part because they could.
