How long does a electronic typewriter ribbon lasts ?
Everything is in the title.
I would like to buy and electronic typewriter (the likes with a error-correcting screen), so which are not using properly "ribbons" as the former mechanical and electrical typewriters, but "cartridge" ribbons.
Of course, my question is not in time length, rather in number of pages, words or characters.
I have noticed that the spare ribbons sold on eBay (to quote only them) are an average of 125 meters…
So, I also would like to know if it's possible to re-ink them, or re-use them (I saw there is different models, some are "carbon ribbons" the others "nylon ribbons").
Thanks for your replies !
@Real : thanks for your reply. So, question : how do you re-ink a carbon ribbon ? Do you have a link or some advices ?
Concerning the length, I arrived to the same conclusion.
And 45000 characters are around… 30 pages of text. So, not much. Especially if we cannot re-ink them…

By now I suspect most are dry even brand new lol. You can re-ink. Some are one time only but I think most can several times.
My guess is about 10 times. Assuming around 3.3mm per letter 45000 letters.

There are two main types of ribbons.
Inked-fabric ribbons can be put in a sealed plastic bag
for a few days after being soaked with some light oil
(sewing machine, gun, or 3-In-1 should work).
Obviously, you wouldn't want to apply too much oil!
Film-on-plastic ribbons are "strike once" --
that is, they are single-use and cannot be restored.
Many of the cartridge ribbons have special wheels
that physically destroy the plastic band
to make them unreadable to inquisitive trash-diggers.
I have some Smith-Corona electronic typers.
Between one and three times a year, I've found
brand-new film ribbons for them at thrift stores.
The usual cost is 10 to 90 cents per ribbon.
At that price, who really needs to re-use one?
