Dog trainers or someone knowing about dog behaviour. 11 year old dog meeting 12 week old pup?
I have an 11 year old male schnauzer that is good with other dogs and loves meeting them. My friend just got a 12 week old male schnauzer, and we introduced them yesterday, and it seemed to go quite well. The 11 year old was very interested in the pup, and the pup had no problems with the older dog.
They will be getting together quite often from now on (sometimes for several days at a time) and I just want to know if what I observed during their first meeting is OK or is there anything I should be concerned about and not allow.
The older dog was sniffing the pup quite often and sometimes licking him and I want to know what this means. Im assuming it means the older dog is accepting the pup into the pack, and looking after him, (although I think it was excessive).
The other thing is the older dog was sometimes showing dominance over the pup (humping motions). THIS is the thing I am unsure about. Is this a good or bad thing? Should we correct the older dog when he does this or allow it? Could allowing it cause problems in the future or would it make the pup (when full grown) be more respectful of the older (and much less energetic) dog?
Basically, is the sniffing / licking OK? Is the show of dominance OK?
EDIT: This is his first experience with such a young puppy. He has met younger (<1 year old) dogs, but has not spent more than a few minutes with them.
The puppy is being crate trained and since he in not house broken yet, restricted to where he can go, so the older dog is given breaks from the puppy. He DOES still keep an eye on the pup though.
We kept an eye on both while feeding and the pup did try to get to the older dogs food but we are (and will) correcting this and will not allow it. BTW, the older dog has fed with another dog before (his late brother) and was never aggressive over food.
So far, no problems with toys because the older dog isnt very playful any more, but we will continue supervising them while together.

The licking is common when older dogs meet young puppies. They are cleaning the pup. The sniffing is most likely to determine what this little creature is. I'm betting that it has been awhile since your dog has seen a young puppy. I would not allow the humping. For one thing I personally so not like the behavior unless the dog is actually breeding. I know that this is normal behavior. Make sure that the older dog has a break from the youngster often. Allow the older dog to get out of reach or go to a safe place. Confine the puppy away from the older dog and not the older dog away from the puppy. This is important as the older dog was there first. It is okay to confine both dogs at the same time. Be careful when feeding both dogs. Do not allow the pup to get into the older dog's food or face whilst eating. Be careful when there are toys involved.

Well my dog is around 8 or 9 and I put a 7 week old puppy with him and my old dog was licking him and I didn't really see anything wrong with that but then while my brothers gf was playing with the puppy and not paying to attention to my older dog, the older dog peed on her leg. So I say just make sure you pay equal attention to them and it'll be fine.

As a breeder of Miniature Schnauzers for over 20 years, I never had any problems introducing new Schnauzers to existing Schnauzers. They seem to recognize each other and all got along fine, male or female spayed or intact. Don't worry about dominance......that old theory was thrown out with the bath water 10 years ago until Cesar Millan brought it back.

The sniffing and licking is friendly and accepting behavior. The humping is normal behavior, but I would correct it.
