How to alter the wiring of a subwoofer?

I have dvd/surround sound combo unit I purchased about 8 years ago. I'm purchasing a new reciever that is not a combo unit but I'm planning on using the speakers I already have from the old system. My only problem is that the subwoofer does not have any inputs for speaker wire. It's a powered subwoofer that is connected to the dvd player. All the other speakers are wired into the back of the subwoofer. How can I use this subwoofer with a new system? Thanks!

If you plug those speakers into a new receiver - they can destroy it.

Those 'box' systems often use special 3 or 2 ohm speakers to inflate the power numbers. This is close to a short-circuit. Your receiver will TRY to provide power but the increased current will heat the circuits to a dangerous level. If the receiver does not go into "PROTECT" mode, the extra heat will greatly reduce the life-span of the receiver.

I'm afraid you cannot re-use parts. This is one reason we hate the box systems. You need a new 5.1 speaker set.

Search for things like the Energy Take 5 speaker set. Or buy that Denon receiver with the Boston Acoustic speakers for $599 from B&H Photo. It will work much better.

    Don't waste your time.

All of the parts of the system you bought were designed

to work only with the other things that were in the box.

This is why those of us who answer questions on Y!A

recommend buying separates to begin with.

Start all over with a new set of good speakers,

then choose an A/V receiver well suited to drive them.

Those speakers from a home theater in a box are not very good. They are not made to be used on other systems. You are better off purchasing a name brand speakers. Demo them with your own source of music at the nearest retail store to you. Let your own ears be the judge. Hope this will help you out.

No happening. Your old HTiB is useless unless complete. The speakers are designed to work ONLY with the original dvd/receiver combo. Throw them away.
