Depression Medication, Is It True?

Alright, I Have A Loved One That Takes Medication For Depression, And I Just Have A Hardest Time Believing That The Doctor That Prescribed It To Her, Is Actually Trying To Help Her. Doesn't Depression Medicine Kill You From The Inside, Or Does It Actually Help? Is It All A Scam For Money, And They Don't Give A **** About Their Patients? Every Time She Cuts Or Something, They Raise The Dosage, Is This Hurting Her Insides?

Its a complex situation. IMO, anti depressants should be used as a last resort, there are too many unknown factors. But, they DO help some people. The problem is it can take years to find the right med at the right dose, and even at that point, long term side effects are still not fully known.

Depression IS a real biological disorder. It is caused by real hormonal and neurotransmmitter differences and imbalances.. However, I am far more of a behaviorist than a pharmacologist. I do not really like the side effects of anti depressants and how they work to our knowledge, so I personally would be more apt to suggest a variety of behaviorial treatments and coping strategies before I medicated someone. But, that is not everyone's opinion.

For example for cutting, I would be far more likely to work on reconditioning other coping strategies, work on discussing how the person is using cutting as a drug, and what they can do instead, healthier ways to express their emotion, than rx anti depressants. But, thats the difference between a behavioral psychologist who avoided the medical degree specifically because she does NOT want to prescribe, and a psychiatrist who went through medical school because they DO believe in the medications..

If you're so worried about her well-being then why are you worried about her getting treatment for depression. Depression is what kills a person from the inside. A good doctor knows what type of medication to prescribe and monitors the dosage in relation to how the patient feels after a certain amount of time.
