Do I cut back foliage and roots by at least a third on transplanting bushes?
I want to transplant approx 12 small bushes (about 1m x 1m) to another place in the garden. On lifting them, should I cut back the foliage and roots before replanting them?

Personally, I would wait until Sept1 to begin transplanting shrubs, bushs.... No, I see no reason to cut back any roots or foliage before replanting any of your plants. Just make sure the relocation area is ready to take the plant. That the hole is about 8 inches wider all around than needed, so you you backfill it with proper soil, and water it in well.
Good luck with your plants

You should never cut anything transplanting your bushes because it would shock the bushes. Anytime you cut roots there is a chance of killing bushes. Trimming bushes means there is less area to help the bush turn sunlight into plant food. I would just plant them in the area you want then water to help it lesson the transplanting. Water bushes everyday. With all this high heat you may even have to water more often

Don't trim anything, especially the roots, until the bushes have established themselves in the new spot. If you are doing this now, they could be trimmed this fall (October/Nov. depending on the part of the country). Be sure to water them well on a regular basis the first few weeks.
