wisdom tooth root canal?
I understand that the wisdom tooth isn't used for chewing & is redundant.
So if i get root canal treatment done, is it necessary to get a crown fitted, as for other teeth ?
Wouldn't it be an unnecessary procedure, since no pressure is going to be put on the tooth ?

It all depends upon the position of the wisdom tooth. If it is completely in arch and is used for mastication then it is advised to get is get it crowned as maximum of the masticatory force is put upon wisdom tooth (if in arch)...So, i would recommend you to get it clinically checked and do as per the dentist says...for more inof visit the link...http://www.identalhub.com/articlecategory-dental-c...

Any tooth that had root canal treatment should be crowned or risk loss due to fracture.
Although wisdom teeth are too far back to be involved in direct chewing, food DOES get back there and chewing on the wisdom tooth does happen. When you are chewing, food goes all over the place, even to front teeth. All it takes is that one time when something hard manages to find its way back there and you bite just right to cause a fracture and possible loss of the tooth. Just as a diamond can be cleaved when you hit the right spot, a tooth can fracture eating something soft if you happen to bite the right way (actually the wrong way) with the right amount of pressure.
Root canals are often not done on wisdom teeth because their root s are usually highly curved, making instrumentation very difficult, if not impossible, and being so far back in the mouth access is also very difficult.

Rootcanal treatment is generally not done in wisdom teeth. If there's decay, a cavity is prepared and filled. When the decay is deep or in pulp, we remove the tooth.
But in some cases, when there is an opposing third molar, and when the dentist prefers to give an RCT, a crown is also given, in order to protect the RCT. Because the tooth structure becomes weak or brittle after root canal treatment.
But again, if the cavity is small but deep, we sometimes manage using, very strong filling materials. And if the cavity is large or wide, then we give a crown.
Basically, there are instances that require crown after RCT in third molars.
