Is this the correct board for 'Classical Music'?

From time to time, there are complaints that questions are incorrectly posted to the Classical Music section of the music board. I see, for example, that just before I started to type this question, that one about Elton John appears on the first page. This lead me to consider that at least 'classical music' should be moved out of the 'Entertainment and Music' section and be placed in 'Arts and Humanities' along with books, theatre, dance, poetry etc. What do others think and, if you agree, how do we persuade Y!A to move it?

Hmm, I think this puts this section on the horns of a dilemma. With a Q all its own: whom do we want to reach, serve and address? Passing strollers who might stray in here on a random perambulation from other neighbouring musical streams in the current classification that already have their attention, we would likely lose, as the threshold to make one's way to "Arts & Humanities" instead, 'on a whim', is quite a big ask, as well as, *to them*, a not particularly intuitive one?

If what we do here is ultimately a matter of being accessible and easily found for all, then the 'bar' into "Entertainment & Music" strikes me as exponentially lower and more likely to be crossed quite easily, compared with anyone having to venture forth as an act of will to "Arts & Humanities". I'm not remotely sure that that is what we should be doing if we want to reach people, and be readily available for others *easily* to reach us. And as to the misposts and other flotsam & jetsam that is part & parcel of the current process, surely none of us are such shrinking violets that a kindly word of redirection or just quickly and efficiently answering an off-topic post, effectively and affably, is beyond us without being prostrate with the vapours or reaching out with clutching hand for the smelling salts? I've certainly done enough of them in other times gone by... :-)

Ivory towers may be seductive in one sense, but we must beware of what we wish for.

Just a thought or two... *N*

I once answered a similar query / muse agreeing with your premise.

Fundamentally, take classical music out of the Entertainment Category and half the mis-posts would go away.

The pathetically lean Yahoo filter could also allow a user to avoid all questions about "Tabs," etc. Probably a thing any high schooler could tweak / adjust in the software in ten minutes' time.

Nemisis' Hmmm, makes me also agree if it was "just us," it might be very pleasant, but then you're not helping anyone or steering neophytes into the thrillingly unknown.

This is a fence-sitter for me. Classical music - like all music - was originally intended primarily for entertainment. The accident that all genres of music (but particularly 'classical' music) has spawned many great masterpieces which are obviously far more than just 'entertainment' is part of the wider issue. In addition, I am a great believer in music being available to as wide a section of the population as possible (as long as they don't belittle, undervalue or insult it, or call meaningless drivel like Yiruma 'classical music').

Mamianka is right to a degree - this 'board' is just an extension to the e-playground frequented by growing numbers of young people (a shocking number of them semi-literate, rude, self-obsessed and just plain stupid). However, I do NOT agree with 'let them have it'. True, we can go to more meaningful forums (or should that be 'fora'?) elsewhere (and many of us do), but we should NOT allow ourselves to be driven away by the intellectual detritus that infests all parts of Y!A now (and I should know, having nearly allowed myself to succumb).

I think this section is where it should be - although I think the whole category question needs to be addressed by Y!. However, we all know they don't care and so any attempts to get them to listen will, in all likelihood, be pointless and fruitless.

If i ever want to discuss anything intelligent or in depth, I go to one of the discussion groups to which I belong. That way, we are known by our REAL names - and are accountable for ourselves. There is no anonymous posturing, or no anonymous messages in which someone is called out, derided, insulted, or otherwise abused. Truth is accepted as truth, and opinion as opinion. Nobody confuses fact and fiction. I have stayed for a while, trying to be helpful - and increasingly, trying to hold my tongue. But sincere help or advice is increasingly met with ad hominen attacks, and bad language. There are entire CATEGORIES of questions that I no longer touch with a ten-foot-pole - they are only going to lead to the Ignorati piling in anyway. And of course - since I use such a term - more insults about elitist and snobs in the Classical section. There is precious little that I want to discuss here anymore.

If I REALLY want an intelligent conversation about music, I can just leave the computer, and go downstairs and talk to my husband (except if the Yankees game is close . . .). Hmm - good idea. Bye.

Added - OK, Del - I can see your point - but it is increasingly aggravating to be here, give the BEST advice we can, and then be insulted, castigated, and called various filthy names. This happens FAR more often on the Performing Arts forum, where I am the Leader - and I think people take shots at me just FOR that reason. Some of them have personally emailed me ( although my email is SELDOM turned on) just to continue their tirade of expletives - because they did not LIKE the advice I gave them. Hmmm. I am still targeted by Trolls (when I give a long, detailed and EXPERT answers on something like flute repertoire, etc.) or when I advise 15-years-olds that NO, they should not start teaching piano lessons this summer instead of flipping burgers - and NO, I will not provide them with a set of lessons plans and list of instructional books! My colleague WireChoir11 has just asked a question here - about just how far do we professional go, in combating the "online video learning" mania. Part of us says that ALL education is good - and part of us knows that NOT to be the case in music, where physical problems can arise from incompetent teaching. It's not like we are teaching Math - where bad teaching might give you a wrong answer, but certainly is not going to give you Thoracic Outlet Syndrome! I guess it is our duty to beat back the Marauding Horde - but it is tiring . . .

Source(s) : YA has become just another online playground for bratty kids - the rest of us are NOT WELCOME. They can have it. I assume that it also RUN by people that cannot find decent employment in a REAL career, either.

    I agree with you rdenig.

In my Intro to the Humanities class, we talked exclusively about classical music. (Although we did a project where we needed to bring in another genre of music)..but that lasted just 2 class periods.

Anyways. If Poetry isn't under the english section, and with the Humanities (as well as theatre and dance) then classical music deserves to be there.

I don't know how to get Y!A to move it.

Yahoo! is run by a bunch of fat cows anyways.

I've always had bad luck with this stupid site. Not just Yahoo! Answers, but the whole Yahoo! experience.

I rant too much about it.

If it were a good idea or not, is purely an academic question in my view.

It's my understanding from a very, most reliable source, that Yahoo has for all intents and purposes abandoned "Answers", in terms of being responsive to any users complaints, suggestions, whatever.

All responses from them is now completely automated, monitored by only a skeleton staff operating out of the UK.

Bottom line: forget about any meaningful communication, responses from them.
