Shortness of breath for 1 week now - please read - Why?
Last Saturday morning I was breathing fine. I went to wake my daughter and when I opened her bedroom door it was like a switch was flipped and all of the sudden I had difficulty breathing, a shortness of breath.
It feels like my lung doesn't fill normally with air, like needing a good deep yawning or like my breathing muscles are too tense and can't let me take a really deep satisfying breath. It's improved off and on since then but is still there and driving me nuts.
I went to the ER and they did bloodwork, found no clots, or anemia (a usual problem I have) and a chest x-ray and said it was clear. I went to the docs and he has me scheduled for a breathing test and an upper endoscopy.
When I'm laying in bed completely relaxed or with my fiancee' I don't have problems once I am fully relaxed and can seem to mostly breath fine. I also breath mostly fine if I am really involved in doing something I enjoy and get "lost in the moment" . This makes me think it is anxiety.
I do sometimes get tightness in the left side of my chest but usually only in the AM. Sometimes it just feels like I can't get much air in or out.
I do smoke about 5 cig's per day. I work 3 days a week and have another very part time job. I have a 7 month old baby and a 12 yr old and my fiance works out of town during the week. I just feel on the verge of tears a lot too. Do you think this is anxiety or something else?
Oh yeah, one more thing, I did have bloodwork on my thyroid (hypothyroid for 25 years) and it was at a 16 (should not be above 5) so my doc upped my meds a few days ago.
Any ideas anyone? Sorry this is so lengthy and rambled. I can't think clearly either. Thanks for any help.

I does sound very much like an anxiety attack, purely for the fact that when you are relaxing you feel fine. The same sort of thing happened to me last year and I ended up in A&E for almost a full day as they prodded and probed only to be told that I was fine. Sometimes counselling helps for this, the chance to talk to someone about problems that you have either consciously or sub-consciously. Your body is telling you to slow down and relax and that's just what you should do. Smoking will - in the long term - be detrimental to your physical health so I would advise you give that up although I appreciate that is easier said than done. Simple measures like breathing exercises, taking a walk, having time to yourself all help you relax and if you feel happier about your life then the panic attacks should subside.

It sounds like you have some issues with anxiety. Anxiety can cause shortness of breath, it can make your heart race, it can make you feel like you're going to die. Please don't think that this is nicotine poisoning because if it were, this would not be happening daily. Don't let what she said freak you out even more. But you should quit smoking because it can make anxiety worse. If you went to the hospital and they found nothing wrong with your heart, it's obviously not that. Your mind is a very powerful thing. You say you've been really stressed, and stress can cause anxiety attacks. I have Generalized anxiety Disorder and I'm also a smoker. Been to the hospital twice and they said they found nothing wrong. I have everything you're describing. Please talk to a doctor asap so they can really let you know what's going on. If you don't treat anxiety now, it could get worse. Also realize that even when you're not thinking about it, anxiety attacks can still happen. Anxiety attacks don't just happen when someone is anxious. I could be watching a really good movie and then suddenly my heart will race. It's scary, but it's all in my mind.

I cant do it for the life of me.. I dont know i think it has to do with panic/anxiety or even ashmta.. I hope everything turn out for you. Maybe try getting some medication.

It could definitely be anxiety.
First when I read the beginning of your story, I thought this could be pneumothorax. But when I saw they made a x-ray, and said it was fine, I changed my mind to anxiety.
Then I read the end of the story, and I think you could be right.
I recommend to do the research you are scheduled to, and talk to the doctors about this. First, after research you are sure it isn't something physical, and second, they can help you the best.
Sometimes breathing exercise helps with this sort of things, if it is anxiety.

Could be as simple as a gas trouble or something worse. Since you already did check ups, I suspect the former. Try avoiding all kinds of beans, onion/garlic and drink plenty of water. Try including Ginger in your meals. Try also drinking some buttermilk sprinkled with asafoedita. If it persists, ask your GP to refer you for a complete check up including chest Xray and ECG. Also your breathing tests for sure!. Good luck!.
PS. Stop smoking!!
