Screen resolution?
My laptop has a maximum screen resolution of 1260x1040 on a 15.4 screen.
when I come to use it with my 22" desk top monitor the image isn't very good. Anyone know if there is an upscaleing add on graphics card device that fits between the lappy and the monitor to improve the resolution and image

I don't think so, but have you tried adjusting the settings. I'd make sure font smoothing and other such nonsense is deactivated.

Sounds like when you plug in the external monitor the graphics card is trying to force the laptops sceen resolution to the external monitor resulting in bad image.
open your display control panel and ensure you can set different screen settings to internal and external monitors and set each to the native resolution of the monitor for the best picture.
some cheaper cards will only allow one resolution setting so its a matter of setting the resolution each time you change the active monitor.

XP:
Right-click on the large screen's desktop
Go to screen resolution at the bottom-left
