What are your thoughts about joining the navy?

My ex husband wants to join the navy. He is 33 years old and we have a 5 year old son. I support his decision because he feels like he is not doing well right now and in the military he can provide a better future for our son. We are good friends and I want to be supportive but I just don't want our son to miss him. What do you guys think?

You will both have to balance the benefts the Navy can offer against the real likelihood that dad's going to be away from time to time, often for extended periods of time, at that. The Navy offers a lot that is economically desirable: full medical/dental benefits for the service member and their dependents, educational opportunities, and chances to travel extensively. But I can almost guarantee there's going to be some time when your son will be missing daddy...particularly now that we're a nation at war. So, there is much for you two to discuss, but he realizes it's not easy out there for any father attempting to hold it down...the military can be very appealing under such circumstances. Just make sure he thinks it all the way through; pros and cons, alike. Good luck to you.

I'm really scared of going to better life, your son needs him home. And the life they promise is NOT always what its suppose to be. At 5 years old your son would really benefit from him being home. I'm sure you will do the right thing, but be sure you both think it over and weigh all the odds, and pro's. Because its a long time to enlist, and the good life or better life is not so clear. Good Luck! Also what if he hates the Navy? then your all unhappy.

Sorry but right now I think is a waste of time. He is going to lost his life, things aren't easy these days, he's going to be sent to battlefield right away. He better looks other opportunities after thinking to join the NAVY.

Source(s) : The president should send the troops back home right now. We have lost the war and he don't want to admit that!

That's the only problem... the loneliness factor. If you can swing past this, then it would quite advantageous.
