Yes and yes. My husband is a retired truck driver and he saw a man hitchhiking who was clean cut and had luggage - not a plastic sack or duffel bag and picked him up. My husband was picking up an enclosed trailer and while he was doing that, he slipped on ice and dislocated his shoulder. He was 60 miles from home and that hitchhiker drove him to the hospital in our city. He is a wonderful man and we stay in contact with him now. It's true you can get in trouble picking up a stranger, but if you're careful, they might be an angel in disguise.

Not unless it was someone I knew, like a close friend or family member ~ never an acquaintance because I really don't know them enough to trust them and NEVER a complete stranger. I feel sorry for most of the hitchhikers but even with my disabilities, I worked and bought a car so I would have transporation..... they can, too.

No. Not safe.
There have been women posing as hitchhikers because they don't seem to pose a threat to some people. They were actually just a distraction for a their partner who would come out from behind a bush and carjack or do whatever else to the victim.
No. Not safe.

Many years ago I did. These days I would never pick up a hitchhiker unless I know them,

OMG my husband did one time and it was the craziest thing he ever thought of doing ... thank God the guy wasn't a lunatic but I just get chills thinking about it. I would NEVER, EVER pick up a hitchhiker... that is just asking for it.

hello, remember the blizzard of 78? well i do cuz it was devistating & it snowed for days! no one could drive anywhere because of how bad the snow was. i was driving home from my job which wasn't more than 4 miles from my home & there was someone hitchhiking so i picked him up. that was the 1st & last time i ever picked up someone who was thumbing for a ride. i was very lucky that the person i picked up wasn't a sycho! (physcho?) or a murderer. today i wouldn't take that chance because of all the sicko's out there. so i have & i never will again.

Yes if I like the look of them, eg young people going to a festival, women alone or with a baby, anyone unless they look absolutely rough if I am already with someone else in the car.
I have also accepted lifts when I've run out of petrol and needed to get to a garage. It's usually other women who help, probably because they know the possible perceived danger of being left to strange men. Remember most people are nice and will not harm you but you need to be careful in case you are unlucky and get the rare bad one.

Not to frighten anyone, but an old boss of mine told me a story on a drive into the city to pick up some groceries and go for lunch. He had a friend who picked up a girl and went into Edmonton and she held him at knifepoint and took his wallet. She then forced him to drop her off at the outskirts of the city and ran off, taking a bus or meeting with others, he didn't know. When they did track her down, she had a long history of armed robbery and violent crime. So I would stay away from picking them up, no matter how 'innocent' they seem--that works in their favour, that you would let your guard down to trust them, not suspecting anything.

Yes, I have picked up hitch hikers in the past. But I don't know if I would do this now or in the future. My reasoning being in today's day and age you never know what will or can happen.
