Are there any websites or books that can teach me different knitting stitches?

I am looking for ways to teach myself how to do different types of knitting (my alternative plan is to go to a knitting "group" or something similar but figured I'd try this way first.) I can do a basic stitch and think I can remember how to do purl.

I would also like to learn how to crochet, is this easy enough to teach myself or would it be better to have someone teach me how to do it? I pick things up pretty easily

Thanks :)

http://knittinghelp.com/ is a wonderful resource for knitters, both novice and advanced. The website has a long list of abbreviations and stitches explained and DEMONSTRATED on video. I basically taught myself how to knit with this website.

http://knitty.com/ is a great online knitting magazine. There are great patterns and interesting articles all about knitting and different techniques.

Also, the knitting community on livejournal is extremely helpful:

    Good luck!

the way that i started out was that a T.V show called Knitty Gritty inspired me to knit, so i went to walmart and bought the size 5 needles (which were later destroyed) and yarn. start with a small but simple projects. a great way to practice would be to make a thin scarf and then move up from there once you mastered the knit and purl stitch. being able to know about gauge helps a ton so that a project comes out at a certain size. remember keep practicing and you master it in no time at all.

from experience, i've found that "klutz" makes great craft instruction books... i did a search on amazon and they do have a book on knitting, and a book on crocheting. good luck!
