What are our rights as tenants? Dry rot?
Sorry it's so long!!
We live in a rental. It's an OLD house built in the late 1800's and it's divided into three apartments. Two upstairs and we have the whole downstairs. We have lived in this place for 18 months. When we first moved in there was a lot wrong with the place, but the landlords gave their word that everything would be fixed "very soon."
The toilet was always backing up since before we moved in, and it took the landlord 3 months to get around to it. The kitchen faucet is and has been loose since we moved in. And the windows in two bedrooms were broken. Not like the glass, but the fixtures, so water would leak in whenever it rained. We had to improvise by putting wash cloths and towels by the windows to collect the water coming in. I even had many personal things ruined due to the water when it would rain at random times, mostly text books. And in another bedroom the window wouldn't even open. They said the windows would get fixed soon. It took them about 13 months after we moved in for them to install new windows.
When the contractor came, he noticed that in my moms room that the framing of the window was very weak. He grabbed a hold of it and pulled on it a couple of time, and I could see it shake. He said that it would be a bigger job than he thought and that it would need to be replaced due to dry rot. I told my mom this, she told the landlord and he said that I probably didn't understand, that I didn't know what I was talking about and that the contractor didn't say anything to him. But if you look at the framing of the window, you can see that there are screws or nails holding the framing in place. It's a large window and the framing is about 6" all the way around.
She also told the landlord that ever since she moved into that room she has noticed that her allergies and asthma have been getting worse. She went to the doctors and they even asked her if she lived in an old house, because something about old homes and the spores from dry rot can cause respiratory problems or whatnot. She told the landlord this and he got mad and said that she didn't need to tell her dr. that.
ANYWAYS, now the landlord is pissed off at us because we have two small dogs, which they knew we had, they even met the dogs before we moved in, and the LL is mad because of the dog poo in the back yard and in the grass. Our dogs do not poop in the grass. It is cat poop, there are many outdoor cats in the neighborhood. we have told the LL this. We know it's not our dogs droppings because our dogs eat that poo in the grass whenever they find it, or roll around in it. SO GROSS! We also hung a curtain on the side door, which is not visible to the street, because we don't have a screen door and they don't like it either, they said it looks ugly. We don't want flies to come in when we want some cool air so that's why we hung it up, with tacks. They are also complaining about "random cars and people" but I recently had a rental car and my brother switched cars with someone for a couple weeks so it was still us. They also said that they think that the other tenants don't use the coin operated laundry room because they don't want to go through the back yard where the poo is, but it's actually us who don't wash here :) We are not gonna pay $1500/month and then also pay for our laundry, so we do that at grandmas. the LL also told my mom that my brothers don't follow "the rules" and that maybe they should go live with their dad. Uhhhh!!!! How can she say where my mom's kids are going to live? The LLs say that they are noisy. But the tenants upstairs watch 2 little kids who always run and the other tenant blasts his classic rock at random hours of the night and you can hear the bass through the ceiling.
AHHHH! We don't know what to do as our rights as tenants here. We love this place but the LLs are real D-Bags right now. I think they want us out of here because of the dry rot. I know they can get into a lot of trouble for it.
Sorry again for the length. Thanks!

3 réponsesLaw & Ethicsil y a 1 décennieHELP! Financial Aid didn't go through and I can't pay for school!!!!?
Okay. Im going to try to make this long story short.
So I am ready to finally transfer to UC Santa Barbara. I had what I thought would be enough financial aid to cover the cost of my school fees and books. Now, 3 days before I am supposed to move into my apartment down there it turns out I didn't qualify for the CAL Grant, when in fact I went to the Financial aid office and they told me that "It went through," and "you got it" (Referring to the grant) Now this is the big grant that I needed to help pay for more than half of the school fees. Since I don't have it anymore I'll need to pay $2100 in fees+books or risk getting dropped from my classes by the 15th of Sept. (That fee will be for every quarter) I only have this amount of available in cash for first months rent and security deposit. There is no way I can afford this.
Second. I checked my class schedule and it turns out two of my classes are happening at the same time. But they weren't when I registered. My schedule was perfect. That's 6 units that are messed up and I won't be able to fix it until the 20th. So I'd have to pay the fees to still be able to change my schedule. ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! I already called my advisor but he hasn't called me back.
I am so irritated right now. I seriously don't know what to do. I do NOT want to get loans. I do not want to be in debt. I know people in there 40's still paying off student loans. And I don't want to be a burden to any family member. I am really upset about this.I didn't sign a lease yet, and Santa Barbara is about 6 hours away from where I live. I just feel like there is too much going on and maybe I shouldn't even go.
I'd just like some opinions or comments on the situation. Thanks
2 réponsesFinancial Aidil y a 1 décennieQuestion about the Jewish Culture.?
Okay. So I am taking a Child Development class on the Issues in Diversity. We are doing a Cultural Research Assignment and we have to research a culture other than our own. I am of Mexican descent and wanted to learn about the Jewish Culture and Religion.
My part of the group work is to investigate how the experience of individual members of the culture compare to traditions, values, and experiences of the culture group.
Anything will help!
Thank you all so much in advance!!!!

6 réponsesCell Phones & Plansil y a 1 décennieMy screen to my Nikon D60 Cracked.....?
How can I get this repaired? It did not damage the LCD screen itself, just the hard plastic screen. I can still see the images fine, it's really a superficial crack but it looks ugly, and I don't want moisture to enter it. I went to a local photography store, and they said that I'd have to send it in, and said it could cost $150 to get it repaired! Is there any other way to repair it? I mean can I do this?
2 réponsesCamerasil y a 1 décennieDifference between these cameras?
I am looking for a good deal for a Nikon d60. I found this on Ritz Camera online. I am not a lens expert, so I was wondering if anyone out there that knows about cameras could tell me exactly why there is a one hundred dollar difference.
I am looking at the camera valued at 699.98 which is a D60 and the D60 that says SALE PRICE (in cart) which is valued at 599.99. They are the same and you get the same stuff but I think that one of the lenses the 55-200 is different. But I can't tell how.

1 réponseCamerasil y a 1 décennieWhat was the name of this show?
It was a game show that came on in the 90's. I live in California, and I remember it would come on AFTER Super-Market Sweep, the winners at the end of the shoe had to run up and down some stairs on the set putting certain boxes that were wrapped as gifts in certain "stores" or something like that.... That's all i remember.... Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I was wondering if anyone out there has had a Bat/Bar Mitzvah. If so could you please explain to me what went on during the preparation, ceremony and celebration. I can't find a first hand account of one online and I'm interested.

2 réponsesReligion & Spiritualityil y a 1 décennieHelp me find out the name of a movie?
I saw it once when I was younger. I remember that the main character has asthma and i think is a detective. He has opened up a case that has been closed for years about a young woman who had an abortion illegally and died, i think he is trying to identify the victim. The twist to the movie at the end is that it is the detectives mother that died. He had forgotten everything because he was only a little kid at the time and he had a really bad asthma attack which made him forget. That's all i remember from the movie. There are a lot of flash backs and I remember that some evidence to the trial is a green dress with white lace on it.
