  • My uploaded website shows corrupted images -- Can you help?

I'm uploading a website created in Adobe GoLive via Filezilla. ALL of the image are corrupted, and when I look at the transferred files in Filezilla, they are all a bit smaller than the actual images I was uploading (e.g., an image that was a size of 588 will upload and show that it's only 571).

    Any advice?

  • Can you give some advice about a know-it-all student?

I'm a new teacher in my first stint at a technical college, and in my class of seventeen new students, I seem to have a self-appointed -- and unwelcome -- "assistant".

In the first week, I've noticed that while I am speaking to the class she will often make a little "clarification" to the other students, as if my instructions weren't clear enough. Yesterday she interrupted me to ask a completely irrelevant question, which greatly annoyed me. I also noticed yesterday that some of the other students were passing smirks and/or annoyed glances when she made her little "helpful" interruptions.

I suspect that she is insecure, and that she craves approval; I don't wish to stomp on her the second week of school, and I am also anxious to promote a cooperative group dynamic and low-key "workshop" atmosphere in the classroom -- but I do want to find a gentle way to let her know that this behaviour is unacceptable and annoying.

    Any suggestions?

  • What's a diplomatic way of saying to no a relative?

My brother and his family, with whom we are not at all close, consistently ignore our emails and cards, and although we always send gifts to his daughter on birthdays and Christmas, he and his wife never, ever, reciprocate.

However, whenever they hear that we are planning a visit to my parents' home (he lives about 3 hours from them; I live halfway across the country), he immediately emails me to suggest that he "send his daughter up" to spend time with us. My parents' house has very little extra space, and my son, who is 14, has no desire to see his obnoxious 11-year-old female cousin. If I say yes to avoid a conflict with my brother, I'll get stuck trying to entertain her for the week, we'll all be crowded with not enough sleeping space, and I'll spend my vacation trying to hide my resentment.

Is there some diplomatic way to tell my brother "NO"?

  • Why is my Windows Explorer toolbar working oddly?

When I hit the "back" arrow, it doesn't go back, but keeps jumping over and over again to the page I'm already on. It's really annoying, and I can't seem to make it work the way it used to.

Anybody have any ideas about what's wrong and how I can make it work properly?

  • How to reduce the size of a Powerpoint 2007 file?

It includes a large .wav audio file which makes the powerpoint show 22 megs, too large to email...I need to get it down to around 5 megs and haven't found anything helpful on the Internet. Zipping the file only brought it down 1 meg.

  • What are those big orange globes strung along the power lines near Petawawa, Ontario?

We drove down Highway 17 to Ottawa recently and were wondering about them. Do they have something to do with the military base?

  • What does it mean when an airline boarding pass is stamped "TSA"?

I was on a flight recently and a fellow across the aisle from me dropped his boarding pass. It had large letters "TSA" stamped in bright purple ink on both the boarding pass and stub. Is this for the Transportation and Safety Administration, and if so, why would they stamp someone's boarding pass -- is this to indicate some sort of high-level security clearance?

  • Problem with resolution on my new widescreen monitor?

Bought a nice new monitor with wide screen. Now it stretches all the images so everything looks like they're being viewed in a funhouse mirror. I've played with the desktop properties "settings" tab but nothing seems to help. Can you?

  • What's the process to pick the best answer? ?

I asked a question a couple of weeks ago and got lots of great responses. But I couldn't figure out what to click in order to pick my favourite!
