I'm a graduate student specializing in high school math education. However, I try to be well-rounded and to expose myself to new facts and ideas.

  • Is there a Windows 9X or DOS emulator that's compatible with Windows 8?

I have a fairly new PC running Windows 8. To check on some old educational games for a potential project at my school, I need to be able to run Win 95/98. However, the emulators I've come across are all for 32-bit systems like XP and Vista. Will any of these work on Windows 8? If not, is it possible, if I come across an old copy of a Win 9X install disk, to install it to my computer and double-boot?

  • Nitrate-free sliced meats?

I suffer from migraines, and was told to cut out nitrates from my diet. Apparently most deli meats contain sodium nitrate. But are there any that don't? I know I'm going to have to cut a lot of other foods from my diet. But I was sort of hoping there was at least one brand of pre-sliced meat out there that wasn't off-limits.

  • part for lock&lock bento box?

I broke one of the hinge pieces on a 2-tier Lock&Lock ecolife bento box. Is there a place to get a new hinge piece separately? I don't want to go out and buy a whole new bento box, but that one was a gift and I really like using it.

  • Thick homemade gummi candy recipe?

I'm looking for one that's similar to Haribo's gummies in mouth-feel. I got spoiled by German-style Gold-Bears early in life, and now most American gummies just seem way too soft and sugary to me.

I think I'd have to use gum arabic in addition to or instead of gelatin to get them that thick, but I have no idea how much to add or when to mix it in. All the recipes I'm finding on the Internet only have gelatin to firm them up--and many say they're even softer than the ones you get in American candy stores!

Also, am I correct in assuming that the sugar is JUST for flavoring, and that you don't need lots of sugar for them to set right? Because I'm getting mixed messages on the amount of sugar you need too. (I'm going for as low sugar as I can get while still using fruit juices for flavoring.)

  • Unsolicited text messages?

The number 59965 has been sending out unsolicited text messages. The only way to stop it is to reply with “STOP” as soon as you start getting these messages. They charge $10/month for these “trivia alerts” and horoscopes.

I never signed up for this! I don't text people all that often (I send maybe 10 text messages/week), and I certainly don't want to be charged $10/month for something I don't want.

Is this even legal? Do I have any recourse to the law if they charge me money or continue to send unsolicited messages after I told them to stop?

  • Sewing machine problem?

My top thread is skipping stitches, and the bobbin thread is snarling up badly. I have already tried adjusting the tension, cleaning out lint, and re-threading the machine. The problem has not gone away. The needle is fairly "fresh" and the packaging says it is for various fabric weights (so I'm pretty sure that particular issue isn't my problem).

I have a Janome Jem Gold 660, and I have been using it for 10 years without having this problem before. I'd really rather not have to get a whole new sewing machine. Is there something else I'm forgetting to do?

  • Help!! Keyboard issues?

I bought an HP Pavilion g7 this May (6 months ago). The Ctrl key on the keyboard is stuck. I can't do anything on the computer anymore (if you try to type, it just does all the keyboard shortcuts instead). I have to post this from my iPod because I couldn't type the Answers URL on my computer. is there any kind of quick fix that doesn't require expensive tech support? I'm on a budget.

  • Non-toxic ant repellant?

Ants have found my dog's food bowl. I don't want to use commercial insecticides because I don't want to risk him being harmed (again, this is where he eats!), but the food bowl is in my kitchen and I don't want the ants getting into my pantry either.

I live in an apartment with no balcony, so there is no "outside" to move the bowl to. Is there any non-toxic way to repel the ants so they don't, er, bug us?

  • Anyone else frustrated...?

Anyone else frustrated that the Occupy Wall Street protests aren't being taken seriously by the media--or worse, are compared to the Tea Party protests that helped get us into this mess in the first place?

  • Printer Disconnected?

I am running an HP Photosmart C3140 All-In-One Printer, connected to a new HP Pavillion g7 laptop running Windows 7 (64-bit). Whenever I open HP Solution Center, my printer is listed as Disconnected, even after I plug it in to my computer. I have attempted every solution HP Solution Center provides (which could have been less confusing, as the instructions involving the Control Panel were only given for XP/Vista), I have restarted both computer and printer several times, but it still says my printer is disconnected.

I have used this printer with this computer once before, so I know that they are compatible.

    How do I fix this?

  • Computer shutting self off?

I have a Dell Inspiron Mini that is about 2 years old. Just a few minutes ago, the power indicator light flashed red and the computer stopped working. The charger was plugged in, and its indicator light was on, so I know the charger is working. The red light is still flashing, even when the laptop is in "sleep" mode (this is NOT normal). The computer does not feel hot, so I know it didn't overheat. What is likely wrong? Can my laptop be fixed?

  • Why do we care so much when the world will end?

We cannot know when the world will end. Yet, instead of making the world a better place while it lasts, a lot of people seem to be obsessed with finding out when it ends. What's the point of this obsessive clock-watching? And why would you want to be right if it means everyone dies horribly?

  • Do the people burning Korans realize...?

...that by burning a mass-printed book, they are actually earning money for the publishers that print Korans? Do they realize that book-burning in a society with mass printing is completely counter-productive and a waste of time?

  • Why do you try to convert people on Yahoo! Answers?

Naturally, this is only directed to those individuals who use their answers to attempt to get people to convert to their religion or lack thereof. Christians and Muslims who insist that "Jesus/Allah is the ONLY WAY," atheists who want us all to "grow up and quit believing in the sky-daddy," et cetera ad nauseum. Especially the Christians who hop onto every Pagan or Satanist "how-to" ritual question with the lengthy, Bible-quote-filled, "You're going to HELL!" answers.

Why do you do this? I'd really like to know your motives.

  • Where did this 100 AD Bible thing come from?

The earliest copy of a modern Gospel we have (i.e., one that's still considered legitimate) is Mark, in 70 AD. All three of the other Gospels were written during the second century--AFTER AD 100. The only other books in our modern New Testament that were even written during the first century were Paul's letters, only seven of which have yet been confirmed as genuine.

Because there were some pretty weird and contradictory gospels going around, church leaders in the 4th century met in order to determine official canon that agreed with the majority of Christian leaders in regard to dogma. This meeting, which also produced the Nicene Creed, is known as the Council of Nicaea. This is where the 74/66 books used today come from.

So where did this idea come from, that I'm hearing from a lot of answerers, that the Bible was completely compiled in its present form in 100 AD? I know I never heard any such thing in any of my Bible classes--only the Council of Nicaea story above.

  • On "People who have trouble believing"?

How could someone want to believe in something as important as a deity and fail? How can someone want to believe in the Christian sin-salvation-heaven-hell combo and not realize that they want to believe it?

Please enlighten me, I'm still not sure how this concept works, or how it makes any kind of sense at all.

  • Does it really matter?

Does it really matter whether or not a historical Jesus existed? Do you really need concrete evidence that someone went around saying "Give to the poor, don't hold grudges, and be humble" in order to take that advice?

Does someone have to be God in order to give good advice? Can myths and legends not have a valuable moral message?

Or is the most important question not "How can we be good neighbors and carry out God's will in the world?" but "How can we prove this one particular incident took place?"

Doesn't the word "faith," by definition, mean that something is not likely to be proven or disproven?

  • Neopagans: A question about visualization?

Every article or book I've ever read about magical workings refer to vizualization of the energy, implying that sensing magical energy is usually a visual phenomenon.

However, I tend to sense magical energy in a more tactile way. It feels like "pressure" or "throbbing." I can still sense the general "shape" of the energy, but it's never visual at all.

Is this a personal difference, or am I doing something wrong?

  • What's with all the mermaid questions?

    http://answers.yahoo.com/search/search_result;_ylt...

    How old are these people?

Kids, you can't change your species. Mermaid =/= human. You have legs and lungs, not gills and fins. Feel free to believe mermaids exist, but rest assured there is NO SUCH THING as a spell to transform you into one. "The Little Mermaid" is just a story.

  • Why are so many people confused about Xbox Live?

3 days ago, Microsoft sent a message to every Gold and Silver member to let them know that Live would be down for maintenance today. So far, I've come across 5 different people today asking why they couldn't log on.

Why do you not read your messages? They're not hard to find.
