  • What is the grammatical function of the negative te form in this Japanese sentence from a song?

I am trying to break down the grammar and vocabulary in the song "Kimi no shiranai monogatari" from Bakemonogatari. I am having trouble with the word 言えなくて (ienakute).

楽しげなひとつ隣の君 (Tanoshige na hitotsu tonari no kimi)

    私は何も言えなくて (Watashi wa nanimo ienakute)

What is the grammatical function of 言えなくて (ienakute)?

I know that the negative te form can be used in phrases such as:

~nakereba narimasen - It’s not right not to do something (to have to do something)

~nakute mo ii desu - It’s fine not to do something (do not have to do something - permission)

and also to say that something is not something, it is something else...

But this does not fit the translation here. What is the actual function of using this form here?

    Tasukete kudasai!

  • What does the Japanese phrase ここぞというとき mean in English?

    (koko zo to iu toki)

It's from K-On's ending song "Don't Be Lazy"

I'm translating it, and I suspect that this is an idiomatic phrase, but I cannot find it online.

The lyrics' translation says "here and now"

  • How can I call and ask for someone on the phone in Dutch?

I need to call my friend in the Netherlands, but I don't know any Dutch. Can you please tell me what is the proper way to ask:

Hello, I am a friend of ___. Is he there? May I please speak with him?

Also, is there anything I should do / should not do out of respect when calling someone on the phone? What is culturally proper?

    Thank you in advance!

  • What is the grammatical explanation behind the word "wakatterutte" in Japanese?

I am having a hard time with the meaning of the word 分かってるって = wakatterutte. I know it comes from the verb 分かる = wakaru. What does the word mean in this form? What is the grammatical form being added to this verb? Can you use this form on other verbs too?

Please give me all the grammatical information as you can please, no matter how difficult.

  • What is the grammatical explanation behind the word "shiterannai" in Japanese?

I am trying to grammatically analyze the lyrics of "Rolling Star" by Yui (The 5th opening of Bleach.) I am having a hard time with the word してらんない = shiterannai. It looks like shite is the te form of suru and it has the plain negative ending "nai." But this word seems like it has an idiomatic meaning which I cannot locate in the dictionaries. Is there a "ran" form in Japanese? Please give me all the grammatical information as you can please, no matter how difficult.

  • Can anyone tell me where I can find the lyrics for Teriyaki Boyz' 5th Element song?

I would like to find it using selectable text so that I can look up the individual Kanji with Rikaichan, an online pop-up dictionary. I was able to find the lyrics here: http://www.kashinavi.com/song_view.html?33353

but I cannot select the text. If you can either tell me a workaround for selecting the text, or actually retype the lyrics for me, it would be greatly appreciated. Of course, if you know of a different place to get this song, that would be great too.

    I love this j-hiphop / j-rap song!

"Tengo EL pelo" marrón" or "Tengo pelo marrón"?

"Tengo LOS ojos azules" or "Tengo ojos azules?

    also can you say:

    Mi pelo es marrón?

    Mis ojos son azules?

  • Is it right for my roommate's boyfriend stay sleeping in her room when she leaves to go to work?

On the weekends, her boyfriend stays over, but she works at 8 am and leaves early. He stays sleeping in her room and then leaves after 12 pm. I asked her to have him leave when she leaves because he is her guest, not mine. He isn't hanging around the house (although he did once), he gets up has some coffee and leaves.

She called me selfish when I asked. What do you think? Am I being selfish? Or do I have the right to an empty house when other rent payers are not home?

  • How do you express prices in Mexican Spanish?

For example, if something cost $34.56, how would you say that? Would you say "Cuesta 34 pesos y 56 centavos"? or something different.

    Thanks!

  • In Mexico, what is the difference between a "tomate" and a "jitomate"?

Everywhere online I look it says they are two different ways to say tomato, but I have a recipe from Mexico that asks for both as separate items.

Tiene que haber una diferencia entre los dos. Por favor, escriba solamente si conoce bien la cultura de México.
